dgmAffiliates and the IAB’s Affiliate Marketing Council

We at dgmAffiliates are very proud to be integral members of the IAB’s Affiliate Marketing Council along with the majority of the major networks in the UK, several of the more progressive agencies and even a smattering of affiliates and merchants occasionally. The reason for writing this article is to communicate to our affiliate base the work that the AMC is trying to achieve and to seek out any affiliates who would like to come along and do their bit to help shape their industry.

A bit of background and a few myths dispelled first of all. The Internet Advertising Bureau is an organisation charged with increasing understanding and awareness of all forms of online advertising. To this aim the council inaugurated an Affiliate Marketing Council, whose aim is to promote the advancement of the affiliate channel as a highly effective and trustworthy marketing medium.

Throughout 2007, the council undertook various projects with the intention of aiding and assisting potential merchants with an interest in incorporating an affiliate campaign into their marketing mix. Please find below links to the affiliate handbook - http://www.iabuk.net/en/1/affiliatemarketinghandbook.html.

Going forward, the chair of the AMC has recently been taken over by Ben Wood, Managing Partner of Vizeum, the leading digital agency.

Appointing such a significant figure from outside of the affiliate industry should assist the outward perception of affiliate marketing within the wider online marketing sector and beyond. Moving forward into 2008 the focus of the IAB will be moving towards defining best practice within the industry as well as providing neutral, external facing publicity for the industry as a whole.

Traditionally the attendance of the AMC has been very network centric, but we are always looking for increased involvement from affiliates to have a hand in steering our industry. If you would like to have a say in how affiliate marketing is portrayed as well as engaging in healthy debate with other industry figures, please let me know by dropping an email to Matt Bailey. You do not have to be a member of the IAB to attend and there is no cost involved for affiliates, just an opportunity to be heard.

Still haven’t got round to promoting Wilkinson?

Wilkinson

You know I’ve been thinking for the last 2 months, I must get round to putting Wilkinson in the Hot Programmes section of the dgmAffiliates newsletter.

The problem is that often the day to day things devour all your time and you have things down at the bottom of your list that you think “I’ll get round to doing that just as soon as I’ve done this”. And of course then something else crops up and the cycle begins again “well as soon as I’ve done this I’ll get round to doing that”.

So you’re probably thinking where is this going? Okay here’s my point!

I have an inkling that a lot of you out there have been thinking about working on or doing much more on the Wilkinson programme. A couple of scenarios:

  • You’ve had it on your list of things to do, but you haven’t got round to putting links up yet.
  • You have put your links up but you’ve done it half heartedly with the intent to go back and add more and make the most of the product feed or deeplinking etc…
  • You’ve been thinking, “I know that I could definitely do something with Wilkinson, so as soon as I’ve done this, I’ll take a look at the site and see what I think I can have a go at”

Am I right?

So anyway I’m not going to talk about the great commissions, because you all know they are pretty much in line with the industry. Having said that they do pay out on “EVERYTHING

So you need a valid reason to put Wilkinson a little higher up on your to do list! Okay well here’s one:

Throughout March Wilkinson will be offering an additional 2% on all sales so we’re on 6% for the whole of that month. Thought we would give you an early heads up so you have a little time to take a look at the site and think of how best to promote them! Remember that’s on everything*!

*yep you got me. Wilkinson only pay £5 on white goods and games consoles. But at least it’s not 0%’s on consoles, 0.62% on Freezers or 50p CPA on other highly demanded/high ticket products.

Okay final point and then I’ll shut up. I think another reason you may not have gotten round to promoting Wilko’s is that you are thinking about what they actually do. I must admit they have got some pretty random products. Every time I speak to someone about Wilko’s they say “isn’t it mainly just deodorant and dog food?”

Nope!

So how and when would you promote Wilkinson?

I actually thought that after Christmas sales would die off a little for Wilkinson, but that hasn’t been the case. It’s doing just as well if not better! I think the reason for that is it’s a bit of an all “year” rounder. They reckon that March will be a great month and that the majority of sales will come over the summer period, with average baskets increasing too ; )

So when do you promote? Well all year to be honest:

And all the others in between that I’ve missed! Not to mention they have endless products that you probably had no idea that they would stock, including furniture, white goods, games consoles, garden sheds, power tools, bikes. Basically the lot!

These are just a few ideas. But with 16,000 (increasing to 25,000 in 2008) products in the feed I think you can probably come up with some good areas for promotion if you just take a look at the site http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/page/home

The all important vital statistics:
Average Basket = £44.93
OSC = 5.2%
EPC = 15p

So what do you think? Please let me know if I’m barking up the wrong tree here and if you have any feedback as to how we can help Kevin.sutton@dgm-uk.com

Meet the Team | Charlotte Aitchinson

I started at dgm in the Graduate intake of January 2006 and worked in dgmSearchLab for 2 years before moving to dgmAffiliates last month.

In Search I worked on our big finance clients as well as some international campaigns, digging out my French and German knowledge whilst teaching myself a few others along the way!

Now in dgmAffiliates I´m across a variety of campaigns including many broadband clients.

For 2008 I have foolishly signed up to a charity triathlon and will be swimming in the Serpentine in order to complete this - what was I thinking!?!

Look forward to working with you soon.
